Dear doctor.....

dear doctor....
that is how any letters to doctors would start off as. frankly i do not want to see any of them cause most likely they will end up being a complain letter rather than a thank you letter.

a movie recently shown in KL in a list of Japan movie festival. well, I am not in KL during that time, so have to use other means.

a weird show started off with the disappearance of a village doctor whom was loved by the villagers. told in flashback style, it is rather interesting to note that how the doctor touch the lives of the simple minded villagers.

* spoiler ahead*

what interest is the doctor is a hoax.conman. n yet, how he tried to his best to work things out. the movie is slow going, "art film" style of slow. i solved that by watching it in 1.5x the speed la....
did i enjoy the film? sort of. it reminded me about the human side of being a doc. did it change any paradigm... hell, no.

ratings: 3 poink (if u watched it in 1.5x speed)
comments: not sure whether it will appeal to non medical personnel as much as medical people.

Monga: not manga

" i think i wan to watch monga"
"wat? mangga? cna go buy lor..."
"not, monga"
"yala, yala, know u like to eat mango d..."

that is how i introduce the show to my wife. highly rated by taiwan. even the poster spot few good looking hunks. i dunno any of them, so the review is rather unbias. from the poster, anyone would know monga is about gangster. probably taiwan version of young and dangerous. partially correct.

the whole show is about how one chap by the name of Mosquito join the gangster due to a fight for a chicken drumstick. there are this character with the name of Prince, Monk, Monkey....stuff like that. It is really a show about growing up. finding your own niche. friendship. GUY's macho kind of story. as expected from any gangster show, there would bound to be betrayal. story is rather predictable. acting wise is ok. beat keanu reeves anytime.

in fact it is a good movie. but i wouldnt wan to spend the movie ticket on it though. not that is bad. but rather sad ending. spoil my day.

ratings: 3 half poink
comments: get the sub version. too much of Taiyu, so cant really understand much of it.

Wong Kok: hongkong fare

it is holiday again, so its time to update the blog. last nite, the whole family was out for dinner but unluckily for us, we didnt know that michaelangelo was close on mon.... so it was a good excuse to bring mum in law to The Gardens. For those who still dunno where it is, it is just opposite jusco, where the old Courts is. yeah, from the main road, anyone could see the Burger King shop.

after last attempt to try something new which
ended up a disaster... it
is interested to note that while we walked past
shops which relatively was packed with customer, TOS was rather.... empty. not a
surprise. this time, we were smarter so we went to a shop with more
customer. tot of trying something oriental so went to WongKok. so many times, we went past the shop in SS2, PJ but didnot went in. so might as well try it.

the place is rather similar to most shop in the Gardens. service is good. the menu? the typical cha chan teng type of hongkies food with a local twist. the pork chop rice, cheese baked rice, range of fried rice, noodles, bread inclusive of macau's pork chop bun... well, you get the idea. nothing spectacular there. mum in law order cheese baked rice. wife stil prefer vivo's one, but i really like the fact the fried the rice first. the chicken chop was bit rubbery though. wife ordered wantan mee with shrimp, "lailiuha". hmmmm.... the shrimp was fried. cant taste the shrimp though, but the batter was good. i on the order hand order pork chop bun... the meat was bit thin for my expectation. price? rather ok, kl price, which is expected for any shop in the Gardens. Rm6+ for the bun, think it was RM 9+ for the mee, RM 14 for the cheese baked rice.

overall, it was a pleasant meal, probably from the bad after taste of TOS left me with lower expectation. the food is average up to wat anyone would expect from such a place.

ratings: 2 half poink!
comments: good way to try hongkies food. slightly better than Food n Tea, though as i remember it, tis is slightly more expensive. IF i remember correctly la....

Soul Eater: i'l eat your soul!

back to my otaku roots!
rarely an anime had moved me so much. ya, gundam seed had ended so long ago, even gundam 00 cant live up to expectations....

everyone around me know that i am still actively reading manga n enjoying anime. but it had since long time i really sit down n watch anime.... ya, i had started genshiken but those are really for leisure watch only. bleach is the only one that i still watch diligently but the episode is comin so slow. most of time, i prefer to read manga... faster. my manga list is simple. just naruto, bleach, one piece n FMA.

i started soul eater long time, but the manga somehow lost its magic midways especially the story sway from the 3 main protagonists. it is suppose to be a funny story bout a shinigami school where students are either weapons or meister (wielder). in the process of growing up, one major bad ass demon was released by the bad guys. so it began the battle between the shinigamis and the demon faction. the protagonists are so flawed. one is manic, another with OCD. i practically stop reading the manga for now BUT the other day, i bump into the anime of the same name online the other day. wat the heck, might as well watch since i am not in a mood for genshiken.

WAT A SURPRISE. 3 episodes, n it was really funny. i managed to capture the essence and the action of the manga n even more. very seldom that an anime surpass the original manga... n most of time, the anime spoil the show. (think naruto, the anime started off as a "lazy man manga", n that is y i just follow the manga instead). Bones studio really did a good job in translating this shonen series. cant say how the story would turn out but so far it had been surpassing my expectations. I manage to get the whole series, so the next few weeks, i will be busy!

ratings: 4 half poink!
comments: despite my high regards, it is a shonen series with humour. so dun expect "gaya" like bleach, but the humour can match one piece, though the zaniness still pale in comparison.

Mapoh: the legendary mapoh

it is always a headache to decide where to eat at lunch especially long lunch break like fri. not long enuf to travel far, but too long to eat so near.

n i didnt know there was a Mapoh restaurant near Tesco/ Jusco. there only Mapoh I frequent is near Wooley in Ipoh garden. Some more, it is called First Mapoh...not sure whether it is the same owner...

the restaurant was full when I enter. that is a good sign. biz is brisk, everyone is so busy. the menu is simple, the usual chinese fare for lunch. single dish plus rice. normal meat such as chicken, pork chops, ribs cooked in sweet sour sauce, thai sauce, seafood.... more than 20 items that i can see. order the day's special which is pigs leg in thai sauce while wife ordered seafood cooked in thai hot sauce... it is really surprisingly nice! bit salty to eat on its own but once eaten with rice, it is nicely paired. didnt manage to steal the food from other frens for taste, but can see the pork chop is rather big size. the price is a steal, RM4-6 per dish plus the rice.

i would definitely come back again, though the cooking is rather cliche, but is a nice one. love it!

ratings: 3 poink!
comments: not sure bout dinner, but lunch is rather nice for a quick fix.

Long Sheng: cholesterol bomb!

had gathering with frens and family...n this time someone decided on tanjung tualang "sea"food. technically it should not be called seafood since most of the food is caught in the river.
anyone who came to tanjung tualang would know that this place is famous for all things marine.

it is a random pick as the usual shop we all used to was burnt down. so we ended up in a shop called "Longsheng" which meant dragon's city. no need for direction as the town is so small that u just go one round and u would find the place.

there were few tables full on a fri nite despite a pasar malam outside, so that is a good news.
true enough, the food was up to standard. very chinese style of cooking. the prawns were fresh, so the one dish that excel was the steamed prawns. the rest was usual fare, which was good, such as fried sotong, oat prawn, crab with salted egg, .....

in restaurant like this, probably deco wont matters. it felt rather nice .... or it could be the wine that is doin the talking. in the end, the price was also reasonable. 1 vege, 1 hojian, 2 crabs, 3 prawn dishes... n each of us end up paying RM30.... reasonable lor...

ratings: 4 poink!
comments: probably the fresh seafood should be steamed rather than deepfried, so consider that when ordering seafood. at the mean time, need to worry about the cholesterol level....

[ close ] Which One cafe: Which one oredi ah?

which one cafe....
yup, that is the name of this small pseudo fusion cafe.
smack infront of TAR college in new town Kampar, it is situated infront of
one of the bakeries. we made it in time before the students start coming for dinner.

the name n management changed recently. so we made it a point to come
to have a look.

the menu was something everyone would expect. usual fare. mee, meehoon, chops or steaks with the usual rice, drinks would be pearl milk n the usual mocktails. i think i can memorize all the shops menu d....

verdict? the food was

not marvelous, it fact too pale for my liking. to norm. cliche. average. ... wat else could i say... not bad either. however, cant say for the price. a bit high for my expectations.
bout rm5-6 for each usual mee, meehon, rice n stuff. n the quality would be something from the usual stall. the place deco was ok.... but the aircon could be better.
ratings: 2 half poink
comments: totally average. cant say more

[ closed ] Cocoon: turn into a beautiful butterfly

last day with Elaine n Cocoon was chosen for the farewell outing. to be frank. the first impression was a bit doubtful, in view the whole restaurant was rather empty. situated across the pub which i cant recall the name, this is situated in the same row as the old Old town kopitiam in greentown biz centre.

we only had light food and drink. surprisingly, the price was rather nice. n even more acceptable as Olivenz. ok. i agreed i am a el-cheapo. the drink was one of the better mix. wife order magnificient mango was superb although i still insisted it
tasted like banana. the hawaiian tortilla was superb, which looks like chapati with cheese and meat. despite the cruel description, it does really taste good. i ordered a slice of lemon cheese cake. it was a pleasant surprise. may even beat the ones in secret recipe....
so overall? nice. would definitely come again.

ratings: 3 half poink
comments: nice ambiance, nice food, clean bathroom. wat else to ask for?

Olivenz: revisit

was going around Greentown looking for good food, n voila!, came across a familiar signboard. Olivenz: the place in Ipoh Garden...which made me traumatized with sausage. dun get me wrong. it wasnt bad in taste at all. but even I ( i repeat it, even me!) cant finish the humongous Jumbo sausage. n after tat meal, i swear that i would not take anymore sausage.... n it took me so many months to overcome the trauma.

so u can imagine my surprise to c Olivenz in greentown. one thing, it is no more the corner shop. less space. smaller size. n same with the food, it was smaller in portion. more managable portion.
order the chicken this time... instead of the sausage. Butter sauce chicken n garlic chicken. tot the chicken will be a better choice. n yup. it did taste better. the price was reasonable (though not as cheap). but still nothing to shout about. a bit on the salty side though. it was cooked as if it should be eaten with rice. the side dish was relatively none. it was served with french fries, alot of fries. as if it is supposed to be fed to those who are not satisfy with the meat.

so in the end, we left the shop, feeling better than the first time. but any lasting impression..?. well, still far from that.

rating: 2 half poink (wife give 2)
comments: forgettable, but least it is a decent place for food.
