The middle movie of the trilogy picks up exactly where the first movie ended.
Scorch Trials is the second of the maze runner trilogy (I hope it will end at third movie), with little updates or recalls on the first movie. Therefore, it will be difficult to follow for those who had not watched the first one. Even for those who had, like me, I find it difficult to recall certain reference they mentioned as the first movie is screened quite some time ago (unlike the Japanese set of movies which seems to leans towards 2 movies screen within the same year).
For those who still could recall, the group of young adults manage to escape the never ending maze in the first movie, just to find out that they are actually a bunch of lab rat for the company WCKD. It appeared that the world is destroyed in the future, and people are turning into zombies, with WCKD company trying hard to find a cure. That would include experimenting on teenagers. But why maze, and that was not properly explained. The group find themselves in a resistance group, who appeared to rescue them from the maze. Of course, the resistance appear like what they seems. The rest of the movies focus of the group running. Literally. Running away from the bad guys. Away from the zombies. Away from the weather (seriously!). Without giving away too much spoiler, it is adequate to say that the finale is between the resistance against WCKD who is set to recapture the product of their experiments.
No matter how cliche the movie sounds, as there are so many dystopian stories abound, this one works. The leads are likable. The bro-hood code of honour seems real. And the action, is fast paced and non stop. The couple next to our seat literally jump and squeal at so many scenes. I admit, there are not many movies that manage to keep me at the edge of the seat so long. But scorch trials excel in the action and the pacing of the movie although the story is not its strength.
As a stand alone movie, this show may not make much sense at all. But as the middle movie before the finale, Scorch Trials manage a great build up.
