Ghostbusters 2016: trip down memory lane

Image result for ghostbusters 2016I love the original Ghostbusters, both the movies and the cartoon. I could still remember the range of toys (for those who are from that era, you may recall the granny or the garbage collector which transform into ghosts) which cash in from the craze, though I did own any of them. Hearing the announcement of the reboot of the franchise did not excite me at all. I was not against of the all female team; I was simply skeptical of the reboot. Most of the recent remake did more harm than good to the good old franchise.

The movie itself is a fair comedy on its own. Adequate jokes to keep the audience smiling. Nice chemistry between the leads. Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy are comfortable in their roles. Even Chris Hemsworth looks effortless in this comedic role, leaving behind his Mjolnir. Special effects look pleasant to the eyes. But that basically summarize the movie. Mediocre. No jokes worth mentioning after the movie, action sequence which had been repeated in so many other movies, CGI that are just not groundbreaking enough. A villain who looks menacing but at the end of day, proves to be more of an idiot than evil.

Add in the team odd looking nerd and African American to complete the team. The villain comes in the form of a nerd who was bullied all his life, and finally decided to lead his team of ghost to torment the earth. Although there is nothing new so far, it did pay lots of homage to the original Ghostbusters. For that, I will pay to watch this version. For those who love the original, seeing the logo itself and all those proton packs brings me back to the good old days. The team maintain the working formula of all the different members, including Holtzman to replace Egon Spengler. The appearance of Slimer and Marshmallow Man reminded me of the finale of the first movie.

It is still an entertaining movie. However, even with the trip down memory lane could not save it from mediocrity.

comments: making a reboot is a double edge sword, either you do very well and goes down in history as one of the great reboot, or fail in comparison to the original material.

Deluscious Food Delight: not a mistake

Yup, it is not a spelling mistake. I just transcribe, not knowing whether the spelling is intentional. Deluscious Food Delight (DFD) has been near Taman Botani for quite some time. As far as my memory serve me correctly, it is one of the earliest shop to set foot in Taman Siber/ Botani when the place was still relatively empty. There was a time I frequently visited Botani, but fate has it that I did not settle down there. Along the main road, near to the entrance of Botani, is this small family run dessert shop. Blink and you will miss, so just drive slow along the shops with numerous restaurants.

This is a simple shop, so do not expect expert deco, personalized service, but dining here is definitely warm with interesting staff. Do not expect high sophisticated choices in the menu, but the highlights would be the Chinese dessert (tong sui) which differ every day. Just look at the wooden tags on the wall to see which dessert is available on the day. The rest of menu is dedicated to dessert such as pan cake. There is a vast range of cold dessert as well, such as shaved ice. Main dishes such as noodle and rice dishes would make sure patrons here return with the tummy full.

Although one may argue that the food here may not be the best among many choices here in Ipoh, but I would say that dining here give me a homely feel with the good food. The dry noodle with braised pork is one of the best combination among pork and mee. The chicken chop and black pepper pork do not shine but do not disappoint either. The pan mee, is bit plain but among the many favourful dishes, plain is good. The dessert choice is aplenty, from tong sui to the cold ice dessert. I have still yet to try their peanut soup, which I will reserve for my next visit.

It is not easy to find a place with both good light and heavy food together with hot and cold dessert. I truly enjoy dining here; it is a nice break from all the fancy restaurants, and I am sure it will disappoint others as well.
