Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation: its the Tom Cruise show

I was very impressed with Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol so much so that I was looking forward for the next installment of MI series with Tom Cruise in it. I used to hate what the movies did to the superb TV series that I followed faithfully every week. However, after watching MI: Rogue Nation, I had so much mixed feeling.

MI: Rogue Nation use a very predictable formula. IMF had to be disbanded after series of unsatisfactory events, and at the same time, there are new threats that surfaces with consist of agents of different agencies that were presumed dead. It is left to Tom Cruise to save everyone and as always, there had to be a female agent around as well.



The script is witty at times, and enough humour was injected in. The action is definitely great, but somehow pale in comparison with the last movie where Tom Cruise climbed the high rise building. The car chase is impressive, but nothing that we haven't seen. The sequence involving undersea maneuver is rather new but did not kept me glue to my seat. The interaction with the rest of the crew is kept to a very platonic and sterile manner. The character of Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg was kept to a minimal with near to zero development. Probably one can argue that Simon Pegg had decent screen time but his character was written in a way that could be omitted and still do not affect the story line.


In the end, the whole movie ended up as a Tom Cruise show. And maybe Cruise and Rebecca Ferguson show. Too many of him actually made me want the movie to end faster. Do not get me wrong, the action is exciting, the humour is nice, but I went into Cruise overdose and for the next month, I probably will stay away from his movies.
