Penguins of Madagascar: childish forgettable cute and cuddly show

Very seldom that I manage to catch 2 animations within the same weekend. And they are so different apart. For those who are not familiar, Penguins of Madagascar is a spin-off from Madagascar, which turn out to be one of the more popular series lately; that is until the last few movies which is rather bland. In those movies, the penguins turn out to be the saver of the show, providing ample funny one-liners and steal the show whenever they are around. But in their own movie, they are so tame.

The story follows the adventure of Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private while being chase by Dr Octavius Brine who wanted to get rid of all the penguins in this world. In the midst, they encounter the North Wind, which is the secret agency consisting of tundra animals. Probably one of the main draw here is the leader of North Wind is voiced no other by Benedict Cumberbatch.

The penguins, are indeed cute and cuddly. And there are plenty of moments for them to do the things they do. You know, the smart spy-like behaviour that never fails to crack a smile in our face. And there all to the movie. A whole show of moments, which by the next day, are forgotten. The action is good in the beginning, especially the chase sequence in Venice style canal. But the rest of the movie did not contain any form of action. It resorted to more childish portrayal such as special weapon to change the appearance. It is as if I am watching a Saturday morning cartoon in my toddler's years. The jokes are too far in between. The villain is too comical and too cartoonish to be taken seriously. And the moral of the story, is too artificial.
A good try, but if felt like the producers wanted to milk the series really dry. They had the chance to redeem themselves with the Penguins, but instead, they deliver a second rated goods.
ratings: 2 poink!
comments: catch only you really like cute and cuddly that much.
